Frequently Asked Questions
What is Life Coaching?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as:
"Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential.”
But what does that really mean?
Life coaching gives you the opportunity to discover how to move forward in your life by exploring your thoughts, fears and emotions. It helps you get “unstuck” and plan for the future, designing a life that makes sense to you.
The role of a coach is to guide you along the way through powerful questioning and to challenge and encourage you to find the answers that are there within you.
Who is Life Coaching for?
Life Coaching is for anyone and everyone.
It is for anyone who would like the opportunity to talk through their thoughts, problems or worries. It is for anyone who might be wondering how to move forward in their lives but just doesn’t know what the path is.
Will Life Coaching work for me?
It will work for you if you let it work.
Life coaching will only work if you engage with the process and allow yourself the time and space to talk and discover more about yourself.
As your Life Coach I will guide you through the process, encourage you to make the changes that you identify and challenge you throughout.
I’m interested but I don’t think I have the time to commit to Life Coaching at the moment.
We are all busy and our diaries often feel overwhelming.
But something clearly made you do some research to find a Life Coach (as you are here reading this page!) which indicates that you are looking for something more in your busy life.
It’s important to make space to discover what that more is and to find some clarity in your life – maybe to design the life that you really want.
A well-designed life is a life that makes sense…
I’m not sure if I can really afford Life Coaching at the moment.
Think how much money we all spend each month without even thinking about it.
One coffee is now around £3 and many of us have at least 1 per day while at work – at 5 coffees per week, that’s £60 per month.
Consider how much you might spend on a night on – the drinks, the meal, the taxi, maybe even the outfit.
What about that gym membership that goes out of your account every month – and you can't remember the last time that you actually went to the gym!
When you add it up, it’s often a lot more than you think.
Investing in yourself has to be worth the money.
As, when you invest in yourself, you take responsibility for your life, your happiness and your circumstances.
You are worth it.
What is the difference between Life Coaching and Therapy or Counselling?
The major difference between therapy and life coaching is the focus of the work: therapy focuses on mental health and emotional healing, while life coaching focuses on setting and achieving goals.
Therapy looks backwards and life coaching meets you where you are today and looks forward into your future.
Can I have a Life Coach at the same time as seeing a therapist?
It isn’t advised as you might get confused and possibly feel a bit blocked with your Life Coach.
We can discuss this but as rule of thumb, it would be better to see a Life Coach once you have finished working with your therapist.
Will you give me advice and suggest solutions for my issues?
No. I won't need to.
The answers are already there, inside you. It is my job to ask you the right questions so that you can find them!
I will stretch and challenge you and, occasionally, I might share a suggestion (with your permission) but you will be the one doing the work. Accountability lies with you.
How often will I have sessions with you?
Each session will be spaced between 2 and 4 weeks apart, depending on what is going on in your life and how much work you wish to do between each session.
Do I have to do anything before my first session?
Yes, but it won't take long.
You will need to complete a Wheel of Life (a talking tool) and bring it along with you to the first session. This Wheel will be emailed to you once you have booked and paid for your first session.
What is the process?
You will have at least 6 sessions of one hour each.
Even if you feel that you have reached your goal by Session 3, it is really important to finish the process so that we can ensure that you are able to sustain what you have learnt.
You will set a goal for yourself by the end of session 1 and we will put an action plan in place for you over the next couple of sessions.
The time between sessions is for you to work on these actions to move you closer to your goal.
The process is practical, results oriented and hopefully transformational!
Do you provide Life Coaching online or face to face?
I work mainly via zoom sessions, but I am happy to meet clients face to face in my local towns of Hitchin, Letchworth Garden City or Stevenage in Hertfordshire.
If you would like to meet face to face in a location slightly further away, this can be arranged but you would be liable for travel expenses.
Can I speak to any previous clients?
I have testimonials on my website for you to read. Previous clients may be happy to have an email discussion with you, but this would need to be organised in advance.
Hopefully our initial chemistry call will answer any questions you may have, and you will not need to speak to anyone else.
Is a Life Coach the same as a Business Coach?
No. People often confuse the two.
A Life Coach works on a personal and emotional level and, although we may discuss your career or business in the way that it affects you, we do not discuss the business itself.
A Business Coach is a professional mentor who supports, educates and motivates business owners. They provide recommendations for a company's vision, growth, and goals. Effective Business Coaches do provide motivation (as a Life Coach does) but they also implement and prioritise strategies to help businesses grow.
Is there a payment plan?
Yes, there is.
The most cost-effective way to pay for sessions is to pay for all 6 sessions upfront but I do also offer a payment plan for you to pay this same amount over 3 months.
If you choose to pay for individual sessions, that is fine, but it is based on a contract agreement that you will have 6 sessions.
When I sign up, do I have to have at least 6 sessions?
The life coaching process works best over this period as it takes time to make real changes in our life and complete the transformational process. It might seem like the change has been made quicker than this but often the deepest work comes in the final couple of sessions.
Of course, everyone is different, and, if at any stage you feel that you no longer wish to continue, we will discuss this and make a decision together.
What if I want more than 6 sessions?
I always offer at least one follow up session and we can discuss if you would benefit from extra sessions.
What if I sign up and discover that Life Coaching isn’t right for me?
Hopefully this won’t happen.
We will talk through the coaching process during our chemistry call, and this is your opportunity to ask whatever you need to know and decide whether it is right for you. There is no obligation to go forward after the call.
But, if at any stage you feel you do not wish to continue, then we will discuss how to move forward.
